Spacemaid
Another long-running band, having formed in 1992.
The quintet comprises Lonnie Evans (vocals);
Alan Jones (guitar); Mat Tennant (guitar); Andy Burgess (bass) and Chris Black (drums).
Spacemaid are one of the few Hull bands in recent years to gain a record contract,
although this has now come to an end following the sale of the company, Big Cat, to a major company.
Nevertheless, the partnership produced two singles The
Girl Who Sold The World and Baby Come
On (one of which made Mark Radcliffe's Record Of The Week) and a very good
album Supercool.
Spacemaid have a major selling point in frontwoman Lonnie
Evans, although the recent media backlash against sexy woman and four ugly
blokes bands such as Sleeper and Republica hasn't helped them any.
The band have also been a bit over keen to follow musical trends, and tailored their style
towards Grunge, New Wave of New Wave and Britpop at the appropriate times.
However, their new material - perhaps more overtly pop-orientated than before - is
probably their strongest yet.
Their name is well-known in music circles, and although the band are currently without a
contract, it would not be wise to write them off just yet.
